The Department of Veterans Affairs Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence (MSCoEs) were established in 2003 to improve access and quality of care for veterans with multiple sclerosis (MS). Accomplishments include the establishment of a network of more than 70 regional MS specialty clinics; the approval of an MS handbook of care; the recent introduction of 3 new disease-modifying therapies; the implementation of a national MS education program for veterans, caregivers, and providers; and support of a diverse MS research program, covering issues such as the development of new disease-modifying therapies, evaluation of symptomatic therapies, assessment of new models of care, and epidemiologic studies of MS.
