Prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) in total hip and knee arthroplasty is a top priority in healthcare management today for several reasons: increased patient morbidity, poor clinical outcomes, and excess cost. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 1 million total hip and knee replacements were performed in 2009.
