Acne is one of the most commonly treated skin conditions. Dermatologists are faced with several growing concerns in the treatment of acne, one being the potential for antibiotic resistance of Propionibacterium acnes and other mucocutaneous bacteria. Dr. Lawrence Green reviews factors that contribute to the development and persistance of resistant P acnes strains following antibiotic therapy for acne and strategies to reduce resistance. He also discusses recommendations from the Scientific Panel on Antibiotic Use in Dermatology (SPAUD) on the use of antibiotics in acne management.
