HCV Prevalence in an Urban Emergency Department

Clin Infect Dis; ePub 2016 Feb 21; Lyons, et al

HCV infection is highly prevalent in emergency departments (EDs), according to a study of blood samples and self-reported health information from 924 consecutive ED patients. Researchers found:

• HCV antibody was found in 14% of blood samples.

• Of those, 34% self-reported a history of HCV or hepatitis of unknown type and 81% were RNA positive.

• 2 additional patients were antibody negative but RNA positive.

• Fully implemented birth cohort screening for HCV antibody would have missed 28% of patients with detectable antibody and 25% of patients with replicative HCV infection.
