Quantifying The EHR Connection to Burnout

Key clinical point: EHRs’ usability is shown to have a strong connection to burnout.

Major finding: Researchers used two scales to quantify the relationship.

Study details: 870 respondents from a range of specialties rated the usability of their EHRs on the System Usability Scale, while burnout was measured on the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Researchers found that, as the SUS score went up, the chances of burnout decreased.

Disclosures: Funding for the study was provided by the Stanford Medicine WebMD Center, AMA, and the Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine Program on Physician Well-being. No conflicts of interest were reported by the authors.
