CDC: Cancer Survival Rates On The Rise
Report highlights incidence and mortality rates by type of cancer
Two-thirds of patients with invasive cancer survive 5 years and beyond, a figure that has been rising, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — the first to include 5-year survival rates.
Among the most common cancers, survival rates are greatest among prostate and breast cancer patients, while lung cancer had the lowest 5-year survival rate.
Here’s a closer look at the top cancers by rate per 100,000 persons (or men and women, for gender specific cancers) and the percentage of patients who survive to 5 years or greater.
Type of Cancer | Rate per 100,000 | 5-year survival rates |
Prostate | 128 | 95% |
Female breast | 122 | 88% |
Lung and bronchus | 61 | 18% |
Colorectal | 40 | 63% |
