New Choosing Wisely Guidance on BMT Released

Biol Blood Marrow Transplant; ePub 2018 Jan 19; Bhella, et al

The American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Canadian Blood and Marrow Transplant Group have released guidance on the top 5 practices in blood and marrow transplantation to question. The recommendations—released in conjunction with the Choosing Wisely BMT program—focus on the following areas:

  • Graft source for patients with aplastic anemia.
  • Corticosteroid dose for initial treatment of graft-vs-host-disease.
  • Optimal number of umbilical cord blood units for transplantation.
  • Graft source in matched unrelated donor transplantation.
  • Use of prophylactic intravenous immunoglobulin in transplant recipients.

The guidance focuses on tests, treatments, or procedures that may be harmful, wasteful, or for which there is no apparent clinical benefit.
