Is Colon Resection or CME Surgery More Successful?
Disease-free survival rates in patients with colon adenocarcinoma
In patients with stage I to III colon adenocarcinoma, complete mesocolic excision (CME) surgery is associated with better disease-free survival than conventional colon resection and should be more widely implemented, according to a review of 1,391 patients with colon cancer.
Four-year disease-free survival rates were highest among CME patients, regardless of cancer stage, as follows:
CME | Non-CME | |
population | 363 | 1,031 |
Survival, all stages | 85.8% | 75.9% |
Survival, stage I | 100% | 89.8% |
Survival, stage II | 91.9% | 77.9% |
Survival, stage III | 75.3% | 67.5% |
