Key clinical point: Risk of bleeding and thromboembolic events with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) was similar to that with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).

Major finding: Patients on DOACs and VKAs had similar rates of perioperative bleeding (6.7% vs. 6.2%) and thromboembolic events (1.5% vs. 1.3%).

Study details: Multicenter, prospective observational study of 1,623 patients at 12 Spanish academic and community centers.
