Cancer Care Delivery Gaps Evaluated

J Oncol Pract; ePub 2017 Feb 7; Patel, et al

Understanding gaps in cancer care delivery can help develop better processes that lead to patient-centered and family-oriented care, according to a study involving 120 individuals.

Investigators conducted semistructured interviews with patients (n=75) and caregivers (n=45). Among the results:

  • Participants reported barriers in health communication with health care providers, unclear care goals, lack of care coordination, and problems accessing care.
  • They said they believed that increased use of nonphysician providers and alternative formats, such as telephone-based care and home and community-based care, would narrow gaps.
