Is There a Link Between Breast and Prostate Cancers?

Breast cancer risk exacerbated with family history of both

Women who have a first-degree family member who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer have a greater risk of developing breast cancer, while those with a family history of both breast and prostate cancers are at the greatest risk, according to an analysis of 78,171 subjects in the Women’s Health Initiative. Researchers found:

• a 14% increased risk of breast cancer in subjects with a family history of prostate cancer

• a 78% increased risk of breast cancer with a family history of both breast and prostate cancers

• African American women with a family history of both breast and prostate cancer have a greater risk of breast cancer than white women with a similar family history (adjusted hazard ratio 2.34 verses 1.66)
