Fertility-sparing surgery is safe for most with epithelial ovarian cancer

Key clinical point: Fertility-sparing surgery appears to be safe for most young women with epithelial ovarian cancer.

Major finding: Unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with uterine preservation significantly increased risk of death among women with stage II-IV serous epithelial ovarian cancer (hazard ratio, 1.61) but not among other subgroups defined by stage and grade or by stage and histology.

Study details: A retrospective cohort study of 9,017 women with epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosed at age 15-44 years.

Disclosures: Dr. Crafton did not report any disclosures. The study was supported by the National Cancer Institute.
