Aerobic Recovery Can Be Rapid Post-Radical Prostatectomy

Key clinical point: The study shows that an aerobically trained patient with prostate cancer can return to high-level aerobic training in as little as 7 weeks post-radical prostatectomy (RP), and even exceed pre-surgery fitness.

Major finding: 3 months post-surgery, maximal oxygen consumption was 42.7 mLminkg, and heart rates during the flat and uphill 30-min sessions at the same absolute-intensity as pre-surgery were 70% and 83% HRR, respectively.

Study details: 65-year-old man performed a maximal incremental exercise test and a 1-hour steady-state test prior to and 3 months following robotic RP to determine maximal oxygen consumption and other cardiorespiratory variables.
