Recent Global Patterns in Prostate Cancer Incidence and Mortality Rates

Key clinical point: Prostate cancer (PCa) incidence and mortality rates have been on the decline or have stabilized recently in many countries.

Major finding: PCa incidence rates during the most recent 5 years declined or stabilized, after increasing, while mortality rates among the 76 countries examined increased , remained stable, or decreased.

Study details: Recent trends in PCa incidence and mortality rates were examined in 44 and 76 countries, respectively.

Commentary:

Increasing globalization and migration patterns make understanding the international epidemiology of prostate cancer critical for effective patient care and research planning. The study by Culp et al. provides an extensive overview of prostate cancer incidence, mortality rates, and associated trends. A select number of countries were selected due to limitations in available data. However, a finding of significant clinical importance includes the fact that 5-year incidence rates have declined or stabilized in the majority of countries evaluated. This is most likely related to lower screening rates, suggesting that patients from many countries may present with more advanced disease at diagnosis. —Mark A. Klein, MD
