Characteristics of Early ARDS In Patients with AML

Leuk Lymphoma; ePub 2018 Feb 12; Van de Louw, et al

Leukemia-specific complications and documented infections were the most frequent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) etiologies in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), according to a retrospective analysis involving 280 individuals. Participants had newly-diagnosed AML. Investigators looked at incidence, risk factors, and early mortality linked with ARDS that occurred within 15 days of AML diagnosis. Among the results:

  • 9% of patients developed ARDS.
  • ARDS was linked with 64% day-30 mortality.
  • White blood cell count on admission was a moderate predictor of ARDS.
  • BMI, transfusions, and sepsis were linked with ARDS after univariate analysis, but the associations were not significant after multivariate analysis.
