Sepsis Incidence in Patients with AML Evaluated

Clin Lymphoma Myeloma Leuk; ePub 2017 Jul 25; Malik, et al

Patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) tend to have higher rates of sepsis and overall mortality, according to a population-based cohort study involving more than 2 million individuals. Participants were discharged from Texas hospitals in 2011. Investigators looked at sepsis incidence and mortality rates. Among the results:

  • 0.25% of patients had an AML diagnosis.
  • 16% of patients with AML had sepsis, vs 4% of those without AML.
  • Sepsis was linked with both pneumonia and acute renal failure in ~one-third of patients with AML.
  • It was linked with hematological dysfunctions in 29%.
  • Median length of stay for patients with AML was 13 days.
  • Nearly three-fourths were admitted to the ICU.
  • Median hospital charges were ~$120,000.
  • Among in-hospital deaths due to sepsis, mortality was 30% in patients with AML, vs 21% in those without AML.
