A trauma patient receives 12 units of red blood cells (RBCs) and 4 packs of platelets and is stabilized rapidly with no further bleeding. Later in the day, nursing reports difficulty in controlling oozing at venipuncture sites. He received sodium polystyrene sulfonate and intravenous calcium earlier in the day. He is otherwise hemodynamically stable and reports no headaches. Stat lab testing reveals the following: hemoglobin 9.6 g/dL, platelets 130,000/µL, INR 4.7, partial thromboplastin time 96 seconds, and fibrinogen 165 mg/dL.
