Severe COVID-19 illness most often affects children with comorbidities

Key clinical point: Although significant comorbidities do increase risk, severe illness in COVID-19-positive children occurs far less frequently than in adults.

Major finding: Of the 48 children admitted to pediatric ICUs, 40 (83%) had one or more significant preexisting comorbidity.

Study details: A multicenter cross-sectional study of COVID-19-positive children who were admitted to 46 North American participating PICUs during March 14–April 3.
