Bisphosphonates may have limited ‘protective’ effect against knee OA progression

Key clinical point: Radiographic progression was lower in women with early osteoarthritis (OA) who were treated with bisphosphonates than those who were not.

Major finding: The hazard ratio for radiographic OA progression (≥1 increase in Kellgren and Lawrence [KL] grade) in bisphosphonate versus nonbisphosphonate users with KL grade <2 was 0.53.

Study details: Analysis of 688 women 50 years and older participating in the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI), a 10-year, multicenter, longitudinal, observational cohort study conducted in the United States.

Disclosures: The OAI is funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study’s authors had no conflicts of interest or relationships to disclose.
