Fracture With ADHD Medications

Osteoporos Int; ePub 2016 Feb 29; Perry, et al

3 times as many patients with no documented attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication prescriptions sustain a fracture vs patients with a history of 2 or more prescriptions for an ADHD medication. This from a study of 10,066 patients with ADHD aged ≤ 40 years. Researchers found:

• 10% of patients sustained fractures.

• Multivariable analysis showed that patients without documented medication therapy had a significantly increased hazard of fracture (HR=3.9) vs those with 2 or more prescriptions for an ADHD medication.

• But, the hazard ratio for stimulant vs non-stimulant medication (HR=0.92) was not statistically significant.
