Question 1 of 5

You are seeing an 18-month-old girl in your office. The patient’s mother states that her daughter has had a fever of 102°F for the past 12 hours. She has given the child acetaminophen, which briefly brought down the fever. The child has been fussy and unable to drink much in the way of fluids. The mother states that she has been bundling the child in an attempt to console her.

On your initial evaluation, you note that the child is fussy and her temperature is 102.6°F.

Which of the following statements is correct regarding this infant’s fever?

The fever is unaffected by the mother’s bundling.

The mother should be instructed to alternate acetaminophen and ibuprofen to better control the fever.

Children with fever are at increased risk of brain damage.

The fact that the fever responded to acetaminophen indicates that a serious infection is less likely.
