Hemoglobin, age, RNA may predict mild dementia in kidney disease patients

Key clinical point: A combination of factors including hemoglobin, age, sex, miR-486, homocysteine, and neuron specific enolase (NSE) was more effective than individual measures for predicting mild cognitive impairment in patients receiving hemodialysis.

Major finding: Based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, a combination of hemoglobin, age, and miR-486 in particular showed the best predictive value for development of mild cognitive impairment in hemodialysis patients, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.897 for this combination.

Study details: The data come from 48 adults with subjective memory complaints who were undergoing outpatient hemodialysis at a single center in Taiwan.
