Manifestation of this chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease ranges from a relatively benign course with occasional flares to life-threatening complications, frequent relapses and remissions, and permanent organ damage. Early diagnosis and treatment of symptoms can delay or prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with lupus and improve patients’ quality of life. Advances are being made in our understanding of the pathogenesis of lupus, with hope for new treatment options as a result.
