Major finding: On average, the time to return of fertility after discontinuing use was five to eight menstrual cycles for injectable contraceptives, four cycles for patch contraceptives, three cycles for oral and ring contraceptives, and two cycles for hormonal and copper intrauterine devices and implants.

Study details: The data come from a prospective cohort study of 17,954 women aged 18-49 years who were trying to conceive and not receiving fertility treatment.
